Santo Domingo is not just a Dominican city — it’s the first permanent European city in the Americas. Founded in 1498, the Zona Colonial is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking it is like walking a time capsule.
After hotel pickup we drive about 2 hours along the Caribbean coast to reach the city. The day is built around the Colonial Zone on foot — the Catedral Primada de América (the first cathedral in the New World, 1541), the Alcázar de Colón (the palace of Columbus’s son Diego, with original 16th-century rooms you can walk through), and the Fortaleza Ozama overlooking the river.
Lunch is at a classic Dominican restaurant in the old city — sancocho, rice, beans, grilled fish — and there’s time for free wandering along the Calle El Conde, the main pedestrian street with local cafés, souvenir shops and street musicians.
On the return we can stop briefly at the Faro a Colón (the Columbus Lighthouse monument) for photos. Back at your hotel in the early evening.
Good for all ages but involves a lot of walking on uneven cobblestones — wear comfortable shoes. Min age 5.
